Jammu: The Anti Corruption Bureau Thursday said it has arrested a Panchayat Secretary (VLW) of Block Devsar Kulgam red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000.

Identified as Shiekh Zada Irfan, son of Shiekh Abdul Rashid of Muniwara in Anantnag district, the accused had been demanding a bribe of ₹10,000 from the complainant for clearing of bills on account of labour charges of MGNREGA works carried out by the latter, which was negotiated and finally settled at ₹5000.

ACB said it conducted a discreet verification which confirmed the demand for bribe, following which a case was registered. Subsequently a trap team was constituted which arrested the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting bribe. The bribe amount was also recovered from his possession in presence of independent witnesses associated with the trap team.

A search of the residential house of the accused was carried out in presence of Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses. Further investigation of the case is going on, ACB said.
