Militant killed in encounter in Handwara

Srinagar: An unidentified militant was today killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara area in Kupwara district, police said.

Security forces launched a search operation in Check Sodul village in Handwara area following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.

He said the operation turned into a gun battle when the hiding militant opened fire on the security forces.

An army official said one militant was killed in the encounter. The person’s identity was not immediately known, he added.

Meanwhile, militants hurled a grenade on a paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployment in Goripora area of Bijbehara town in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday, leaving four personnel injured.

Reports said that the militants hurled a grenade on the CRPF personnel in Goriwan area.

They said the injured personnel were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Lashkar-e-Toiba took responsibility for the grenades hurled on CRPF bunker at Zerpora, Bijbehara in Anantnag South Kashmir.

Militants loot four rifles from cops guarding politician in Shopian

IED detected in Tral village

Srinagar: Militants on Thursday looted four weapons from policemen guarding the residence of former Congress leader Mohd Shafi Banday in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

An official said that militants attacked the guard post of Banday at his residence in Bonbazar area of Shopian and fled away with four rifles.

He said the area was cordoned off to nab the attackers.

Giving details about the incident, a police spokesman in a statement said: “Terrorists in the evening hours tonight barged inside a guard post at Bona Bazar in District Shopian and managed to flee with four rifles from there. Search operation is underway in the nearby areas. The circumstances leading to the incident is being ascertained.

“Initial probe suggests complicity of proscribed terror outfit HM in the incident. Police has initiated investigations into the matter.”

Meanwhile, reacting to the weapon snatching incident in Shopian this evening, the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) spokesperson clarified that Mohd Shafi Banday was not in the Congress, saying that Banday is a PDP leader from Shopian.

In a Statement issued, the JKPCC Spokesperson refuted in toto the news item carried by section of press linking Mohd Shafi Banday with Congress Party.

Giving details about the political career of Mohd Shafi Banday, the Spokesperson clarified that Banday, previously contested Elections on Congress Ticket in the year 2002 from Shopian Assembly Segment and after the elections, he joined PDP and contested elections as PDP Candidate from Shopian in  2008  and in 2014, Banday supported PDP candidate.

Meanwhile, a major tragedy was averted as security forces recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by militants in Tral area of Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir today, police said.

A 20 kg IED was fitted in a bucket by the roadside at Hundoora in Tral area, a police official said.

He said that it was defused by a bomb disposal squad without any harm.
