Srinagar: Police on Tuesday registered separate cases against National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Mayor of Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattoo for allegedly circulating misleading content on digital and social media platforms.
In a statement, police said the action was taken following credible inputs regarding the circulation of “false, fabricated and misleading” content aimed at creating fear, disturbing public order and inciting unlawful activities.
The statement said that the content in question prima facie reflected the dissemination of “distorted narratives and unverified information” that could potentially cause public unrest and societal disharmony. “Such deliberate attempts to spread misinformation pose a serious threat to peace, security and overall stability,” the police said.
According to officials, FIR No. 02/2026 and FIR No. 03/2026 have been registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Cyber Police Station, Srinagar. Investigations into both cases have been initiated and are currently underway.
Reiterating its commitment to maintaining public peace and law and order, Police urged citizens to verify information through official and credible sources before sharing content online. It also advised the public to refrain from circulating unverified material that could disturb communal harmony or public order.
Police said further legal action would follow as warranted under law.
