Jammu: Six police personnel were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty after three inmates, two Pakistani nationals and a local gangster, escaped from a juvenile facility in the R S Pura sector here, officials said on Tuesday.
The development comes even as police teams arrested the two Pakistani nationals, Mohammad Suna-ullah and Ahsan Anwar, from a village in Punjab’s Ludhiana within 24 hours of the incident. However, the local gangster Karajeet Singh alias Gugga, a resident of Dablehar in R S Pura, remains at large and a search operation is underway to trace him.
The trio had allegedly attacked police personnel and fled from the juvenile home around 5.15 pm on Monday, leaving two policemen injured.
Officials said six police personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were placed under suspension as part of a departmental inquiry to ascertain how the escape occurred and whether there were lapses in security deployment.
Police have registered an FIR under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (assault to deter a public servant), 262 (escape from lawful custody), 307, and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act.
Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and Inspector General, Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, visited the spot and ordered a probe into various angles, including possible conspiracy and the procurement of a country-made pistol by the inmates.
A purported video of the gangster, allegedly linked to the ‘Khauff’ gang, firing several rounds inside the juvenile home surfaced on social media, raising concerns over security arrangements.
Singh had earlier been arrested in connection with the murder of rival gang leader Sumit Jandiyal alias ‘Gataru’ in Jammu’s Jewel Chowk area in January last year and was subsequently lodged in the juvenile home.
