Srinagar: The Ministry of Culture, Government of India has approved the prestigious Tagore Research Scholarship in favour of Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan, a noted theatre practitioner and researcher from Jammu and Kashmir.

The recognition places him among a select group of scholars chosen from across the country and highlights his contribution to the field of theatre and performing arts.

Under the fellowship, Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan will undertake a research project titled “Kashmiri Theatre – An In-Depth Study Since Independence.” The study will explore the evolution of Kashmiri theatre over the past seven decades, documenting its artistic roots, key transformations, and resilience amid changing social and political contexts. By situating Kashmiri theatre within the larger narrative of Indian performing arts, the research aims to underline both its distinct identity and its broader cultural significance.

The Tagore Research Scholarship is among the most respected fellowships offered by the Ministry of Culture and is designed to promote advanced research in literature, performing arts, and cultural studies. This year, only 35 scholars from across India have been selected for the award.

Notably, Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan is the sole recipient from Jammu and Kashmir, making the achievement a moment of pride for the region. His selection reflects the growing recognition of Kashmir’s cultural heritage at the national level and is expected to help bring local theatre traditions to a wider academic and artistic audience.

The fellowship will enable him to carry out in-depth research, contribute meaningfully to cultural scholarship, and serve as an inspiration for future generations of artists and researchers from the region.
