Satish Sharma inaugurates Open Chess tournament at Jammu

Says govt committed to strengthening sports ecosystem across J&K

JAMMU: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Youth Services & Sports, Information Technology, Transport, ARI & Trainings, Satish Sharma, inaugurated the Open Chess Tournament at Trikuta Nagar here today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister lauded the organisers for promoting chess, a sport that sharpens intellect, discipline, and strategic thinking among youth. He said that chess not only nurtures mental agility but also instils patience, focus, and problem-solving abilities, which are essential life skills.

Satish Sharma reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening the sports ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir by encouraging both outdoor and indoor sports. He said that initiatives promoting mind sports like chess play a vital role in identifying and nurturing talent at the grassroots level and providing youth with constructive and competitive platforms.

The Minister highlighted that the Government, under the vision of inclusive development, is working to ensure better infrastructure, institutional support, and opportunities for sportspersons across disciplines. He also appreciated the role of private institutions and associations in partnering with the government to promote sports and youth engagement.

Officials of the Jammu District Chess Association, organisers, players, coaches, and sports enthusiasts were present on the occasion.

The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from players across age groups, reflecting the growing popularity of chess in the region.
