Srinagar: The Traffic Police Headquarters Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday issued a detailed traffic plan and advisory for Feb 1, 2026, warning of slow vehicular movement on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway due to multiple disruptions, including a single lane stretch and adverse weather conditions.

Officials said traffic movement remained sluggish on Jan 30 between Marog and Kishtwari Pather on NH 44 following a breakdown of two heavy motor vehicles. The situation has been further aggravated by a 20 to 30 metre single lane stretch at Kishtwari Pather, caused by the sinking of the road. In view of this, heavy motor vehicles have been advised to ply only on alternate days.

Passengers and operators of light motor vehicles have been advised to prefer the Jammu Srinagar highway during daytime, as shooting stones and landslides are frequently reported between Nachlana and the Banihal area. Authorities also cautioned commuters about slippery road conditions between Nachlana and the Navyug Tunnel due to fresh snow accumulation.

The advisory stressed strict lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong lane driving would lead to congestion.

As per the traffic plan, subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, LMVs, passenger vehicles and private cars shall be allowed from both sides on the Jammu Srinagar highway. However, HMVs will not be permitted from Jammu towards Srinagar via NH 44. HMVs will be allowed from the Navyug Tunnel side towards Jammu after assessing the road situation, with traffic releases coordinated by Traffic Control Units Srinagar and Ramban.

Security forces have been advised not to ply convoys against the issued traffic plan, considering the narrow carriageway between Ramban and Banihal. SF convoys from Srinagar towards Jammu may be allowed after confirmation of road status by TCU Ramban.

The Kishtwar Sinthan Anantnag road and Mughal Road remain closed for vehicular movement due to heavy snow accumulation.

On the Srinagar Sonamarg Gumri axis, LMVs shall be allowed from Srinagar towards Sonamarg and from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 1100 hours and 1500 hours, subject to fair weather and clearance from the Border Roads Organisation. HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil only after assessing the road conditions. SF convoys moving from Srinagar to Kargil are advised to plan movement in a manner that does not disrupt civilian traffic.

The traffic department urged people to undertake journeys only after confirming road status from traffic control units at Jammu, Srinagar, Ramban, Udhampur, PCR Kishtwar and PCR Kargil. (KNT)
