JAMMU: A meeting of the Committee on Environment of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was held today under the Chairmanship of MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami to discuss the environmental issue.
Threadbare discussions were held on environment-related issues pertaining to illegal Mining, conservation and preservation of wetland areas, rising threats of cancer deaths due to pesticides in Kashmir, particularly south Kashmir, besides other various issues pertaining to saving the environment.
Legislators Rajiv Jasrotia, Sajjad Shafi, Zafar Ali Khatana, Irshad Rasool Kar and Yudhvir Sethi attended the meeting. They gave their valuable suggestions regarding various environmental issues with respect to the protection of the environment in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Committee also discussed various issues on environmental challenges and steps needed to mitigate the problems. It deliberated on measures to restore the ecological balance of the environment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chairman, JK Pollution Control Board (JK PCB), Vasu Yadav, briefed the Committee about the functioning of the Pollution Control Board, besides the progress on measures being undertaken to minimise the pollution level in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chairman of the Committee directed the Chairman PCB to submit a comprehensive report on the issues raised in the meeting with action taken before the next meeting of the committee.
Tarigami proposed a one day environment conference be held under the chairmanship of Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to discuss various issues including environmental degradation issues.
Among others, Deputy Secretary, Assembly Secretariat, Rukhsana Mirza; Under Secretary, Assembly Secretariat, Shabir Ahmad Wani and other senior officials were also present in the meeting.
