Govt imposed civic polls in an unfavorable situation: Tarigami

Srinagar: CPI(M) leader M. Y. Tarigami on Monday expressed serious concern over reports of Kashmiri students and labourers facing harassment in different parts of the country in the aftermath of the recent terrorist attack in Delhi.

Tarigami said that while those involved in the “heinous terrorist act” must be brought to justice, innocent citizens must not be subjected to intimidation or suspicion. He warned that the emerging environment of fear is creating anxiety among young people studying outside Jammu and Kashmir.

“Students should not be dragged into it. The country must ensure a sense of security for them instead of exposing them to harassment,” he said, stressing that such conditions are detrimental to a healthy and conducive atmosphere for learning and livelihood.

He cautioned that alienating innocent people—particularly the youth—has historically proven counterproductive. “Desperation is always counterproductive,” Tarigami noted, adding that indiscriminate actions during conflict situations have only deepened mistrust and alienation.

The CPI(M) leader called for effective intervention to stop the alleged harassment and urged law enforcement agencies to avoid indiscriminate arrests in response to the Delhi incident.

“Those responsible for the terror act must be punished, but innocent students, labourers and ordinary citizens should not suffer. Efforts should focus on winning the trust of the people, not pushing them to the wall,” he said.
