Srinagar: The Indian Army on Saturday commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Shalateng — a defining moment in the 1947–48 Indo-Pak War — with a solemn ceremony at the Shalateng Garrison in Srinagar.

The event paid tribute to the valiant soldiers and local civilians whose courage and sacrifice safeguarded Srinagar from advancing Pakistani raiders in November 1947.

Organised by Headquarters Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo), the commemoration reflected on the legacy of valour, unity, and service epitomised by the heroes of Shalateng. The day’s events began with an Ex-Servicemen Rally, which saw enthusiastic participation from veterans and veer naris. The rally featured interactive sessions on post-service rehabilitation, second-career opportunities, and recognition of veterans’ contributions to nation-building. Veterans also shared first-hand accounts of their battlefield experiences, inspiring the audience with their courage and resilience.

Adding to the spirit of remembrance, students and teachers from Army Goodwill Schools across Kashmir participated in a heritage and educational tour of the Shalateng War Museum — a living archive of the region’s military history. They interacted with veterans, learning about the ethos of patriotism, discipline, and national service.

The event concluded with the General Officer Commanding, Kilo Force, along with veterans, students, and teachers, laying wreaths at the war memorial and paying homage to the martyrs. The solemn Guard of Honour and resonating notes of the bugle evoked deep emotion and pride among all present.

The commemoration served as a reminder of the enduring bond between the Indian Army and the people of Kashmir and stood as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of those who defended the Valley in 1947. It reaffirmed the collective resolve to uphold the ideals of bravery, unity, and devotion that define the nation’s military heritage.
