Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Sunday condemned the shocking incident involving a Kashmiri postgraduate student of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, whose rented accommodation was allegedly vandalized by a group of drunken individuals late last night.

In a statement here, JKSA said the victim, Dr. Hilal, a resident of Kashmir, returned from night duty to find the door and windows of his room broken and his belongings scattered. Upon inquiry, his brother, also a postgraduate student at GMC, informed him that a few doctors, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, had forcibly barged into their room, damaged property, and hurled abuses, including deeply communal and derogatory slurs against the Kashmiri people.

JKSA expresses deep anguish and concern over the incident. “It is an attack not only on an individual but on the very spirit of unity, dignity, and mutual respect that underpins our diverse society. Such reprehensible behaviour is unbecoming of any individual, let alone members of the medical fraternity who are expected to embody compassion, ethics, and professionalism. This incident reflects a worrying erosion of moral and social values,” JKSA said.

It urged the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take serious cognizance of the matter, ensure a fair and time-bound investigation, and bring culprits to justice without delay.

“Acts like these not only traumatize young medical professionals working tirelessly in demanding environments but also sow seeds of fear and alienation among Kashmiri students. The administration must act decisively to reassure students that their safety, dignity, and identity are protected,” he added.

The Association further appealed to the GMC Jammu administration to initiate an internal inquiry and take exemplary disciplinary action against those involved. It emphasized the need for establishing a grievance redressal mechanism and ensuring a zero-tolerance policy against any form of harassment or discrimination within the campus or hostels.

“Our campuses must remain spaces of learning and healing, not intimidation and hate,” JKSA said.
