Handwara: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against a social media user for allegedly spreading false and misleading information on social media platforms, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, the action followed a complaint received at Police Station Handwara, where it was found that a Facebook post uploaded by Mohammad Yousuf contained fabricated allegations aimed at maligning the reputation of an institution and inciting public unrest in the area.
Taking cognizance of the matter, police registered a case (FIR No. 232/2025) under Sections 353(1) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Handwara. An investigation into the case has been initiated.
A police spokesperson urged social media users to exercise restraint and verify the authenticity of information before posting or sharing it online. “Spreading unverified or misleading content can lead to public disorder. Citizens are advised to use social media responsibly,” the spokesperson said.
