Former DGP, Pandit passes away

Srinagar: Former Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Ghulam Jeelani Pandit, who served as the fourth DGP of J&K Police and a first “state subject” of erstwhile state of J&K, passed away on Sunday evening.

Born on 22 February 1933, Pandit, Pandit was 92.

The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has condoled the passing away of Gulam Jeelani Pandit.

In a condolence message, the Lieutenant Governor said: “Saddened to learn about the passing away of Shri Gulam Jeelani Pandit Ji, former DGP of Jammu Kashmir. He will always be remembered for his devotion to duty and service to the nation. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this hour of grief. I pray for peace of the departed soul”.

Pandit was also remembered by colleagues and well-wishers as a thorough gentleman who earned respect across ranks during his distinguished career in the police service.

The present Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, along with all ranks of J&K Police, have expressed deep sorrow over his demise. The force collectively mourned the loss, offering heartfelt condolences and prayers for strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief, police sources said.

Pandit joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police Service early in his career, rising through the ranks. He assumed the role of DGP—the fourth individual to hold this position in the force’s history—on May 21, 1987.

He was the first “state subject” to hold this post.
