Santiago: Bhavani Thekkada Nanjunda has created history for India in the field of winter sports. On September 14–15, 2025, at the South America Cross-Country Skiing FIS Competition held in Corralco, Chile, Bhavani won two bronze medals — in the 5 km Distance Race and the 1.3 km Sprint Race.

With this remarkable performance, Bhavani has become the first Indian woman ever to win an international medal in cross-country skiing at a FIS event.

Hailing from Coorg, Karnataka — a region known for its coffee plantations, rolling hills, and proud Kodava warrior heritage — Bhavani’s journey to the snow tracks of the world is extraordinary. With no snow in her native region, she began her sporting journey as a mountaineer in the Himalayas. Her passion and perseverance led her to cross-country skiing, where she has continually broken new ground for India.

These historic medals are a testament to her courage, resilience, and unwavering belief. They represent not only a personal triumph but also a milestone for India and for aspiring athletes who dare to chase the impossible.

Excerpts from Bhavani’s interaction with Kashmir Images from Chile:

Q: How do you feel after winning two back-to-back medals for India?

It feels absolutely incredible. Winning one medal itself was a dream, but bringing home two back-to-back medals for India in cross-country skiing is historic. I feel proud, humbled, and motivated to keep pushing further.

Q: What is your message for young athletes interested in winter sports?

My message is simple — don’t be afraid to dream big, even if your surroundings don’t seem to support that dream. Coming from Coorg, where there’s no snow, I still found my path into skiing. With hard work, passion, discipline, and patience, you can achieve anything.

Q: What’s your ultimate target in cross-country skiing?

My biggest target is the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. I want to qualify, compete at the highest level, and make India proud by showing that we too can stand strong in winter sports on the global stage.

Q: How difficult has your journey been so far?

It’s been extremely challenging. From financial struggles, lack of infrastructure in India, and visa issues, to training far away from home — it has tested me in every way. But every challenge has only made me stronger and more determined.

Q: How important has your family’s support been?

My family has been my backbone. Even though skiing was completely new to them, they always trusted me and supported my choices. Without their constant encouragement, I wouldn’t have made it this far.
