Srinagar: Police in Shopian have detained two persons under Public Safety Act (PSA) for their alleged complicity in thieving repeatedly, a police spokesperson informed Friday.
Altaf Mushtaq Ganie, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Ganie of Meemander Shopian, and Showkat Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam Nabi of Astan Mohalla Arhama Shopian, were booked under the PSA and subsequently lodged in District Jail Udhampur.
Police said they are “chronic offenders with a criminal history spanning over a decade”. A total of 12 FIRs are registered against them at Police Station Shopian, Altaf Mushtaq is involved in seven FIRs and Showkat Ahmad is involved in five, police said.
Despite repeated arrests and legal proceedings, they continued to indulge in criminal activities after being released on bail, thereby posing a constant nuisance to the public. Given their persistent involvement in theft, burglary, intimidation, and other offences, both have been declared habitual offenders and a threat to public peace. After completion of all legal formalities, detention orders were obtained from the District Magistrate, Shopian, following which both accused were taken into custody, police said.
