Srinagar: In a joint operation, the Food Safety and the Sales Tax departments on Sunday seized around 340 kilograms of unlabelled meat consignment at the Srinagar Airport.

Officials said that the consignment had been booked through air cargo by a Srinagar-based dealer and that the consignment was without any declaration.

“The unlabelled meat of 340 kg was found during checking at the cargo section and was seized on the spot,” official said.

Confirming the development, Smiti Sethi, Commissioner, Food and Drug Controller J&K, said the operation is underway and further details will be shared once the process is completed.

Earlier in August, the Food Safety department carried out multiple raids across Srinagar and other districts, during which nearly 12,000 kilograms of substandard and misbranded food items were destroyed.

In one such drive, teams seized large stocks of unhygienic meat and bakery items from different markets in Srinagar, while notices were served to several dealers found violating food safety norms.

Officials said the operations are part of an intensified crackdown to ensure safe and hygienic food supply in Jammu and Kashmir. (KNC)
