Anantnag: A sudden and mysterious gush of water in the Hallpora area of Kokernag late last night triggered a flash flood–like situation, spreading fear and panic among residents.

According to eyewitnesses, a large volume of water began flowing rapidly into the lower areas without any prior warning or visible source. The water was described as exceptionally clear, cold, and bluish in color—characteristics typically associated with natural springs or underground reservoirs.

One local resident recalled a similar incident from 2014, saying: “We heard a loud rushing sound around 7:30 p.m. and came out to find the entire area flooded. The water was crystal clear and freezing cold. We have no idea where it is coming from.”

What deepened the mystery was the absence of rainfall and the lack of any reported breach in nearby rivers or streams. While some residents believe the phenomenon could be the sudden emergence of a new underground spring, others speculate it may be linked to geological or environmental shifts.

The district administration promptly took notice of the situation and dispatched emergency response teams to the affected area. Revenue officials and personnel from the Department of Water Resources visited the site, but the exact source of the water remains unidentified.

Officials said: “We are thoroughly investigating the incident. It is imperative that geologists and hydrology experts are consulted to determine the cause behind the sudden emergence of water.”

Experts note that in mountainous regions like Kokernag—known for its natural springs and water bodies—such events can sometimes occur when underground water pressure suddenly increases, leading to the formation of new outlets.

For now, authorities have urged residents to remain cautious. Temporary relief measures have been put in place, and further assessments are ongoing.

This unusual occurrence has raised fresh questions from both scientific and environmental perspectives, and only a detailed expert investigation will reveal the true origin and cause of the mysterious water in Hallpora Kokernag.
