Jammu:  The Northern Railways on Sunday operated three special trains from Jammu station, carrying over 1,500 stranded passengers to their onward destinations, as usual rail traffic remained suspended for the sixth day in the region.

The Kolkata-bound special train carried about 450–500 passengers from Jammu at 2 pm. Similarly, the Chennai-bound departed at 4 pm with over 400 passengers and the third one headed to Delhi at 6 pm with 600–650 passengers on board, officials said.

The Railway Police and civil administration have established a dedicated help desk at Jammu railway station to assist passengers who are stuck.

The Northern Railway’s Jammu Division have released the list of the cancelled trains. Due to misalignment and breaches at multiple locations, rail traffic between Kathua and Udhampur has been suspended, resulting in the cancellation of trains. However, the train service on the Katra-Srinagar-Katra track is operational, the official said. PTI AB

Scores of people, especially pilgrims, were stranded as heavy rains have been lashing the Jammu region since August 26, severely disrupting rail and road traffic. A landslide that struck near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra claimed 34 lives. The Jammu region on August 27 recorded its heaviest rainfall at 380 mm since 1910.
