Srinagar: Urinary Incontinence is the unwanted and involuntary leakage of urine. Increasing age, recurrent infections, certain drug intake, and repeated childbirth are the leading causes of urinary incontinence.
A senior urologist of Modern Hospital in Srinagar, Prof (Dr) Mufti Mahmood Ahmad, said, “Urologists across the globe are urging the public to break the stigma surrounding incontinence, a condition that is affecting an estimated 400 million people globally. One in every five females and one in every ten males suffer from this condition.” He was speaking at a patient awareness program on the said subject in the city. Experts believe that through awareness, medical support, and empathy, we can make continence care more accessible and reduce the stigma for millions.
According to Dr. Mufti Mahmood, “In India, incontinence is often treated as a taboo subject. The silence around it means many people suffer unnecessarily, unaware that effective help is available. It is a common medical condition that can be managed or even cured with the right treatment.”
The dangerous assumption that changes in urinary habits are merely a part of aging can result in delayed diagnosis and treatment of bladder-related problems. Hence, any changes in urinary habits, no matter how minor they may seem, should always be investigated thoroughly, experts opine.
People suffering from this condition restrict themselves from living life as they would like to. Embarrassment, intimacy issues can impact relationships and can significantly lower self-esteem and lead to a loss of independence.Incontinence is not just a medical issue—it’s a quality-of-life issue. Simple lifestyle changes, pelvic floor exercises, or medication can make a big difference.
