Handicraft exhibition and training prog held in Kulgam to empower local artisans

Kulgam: A vibrant Exhibition, Workshop, and Training Program was recently organised at Ashmuji Mirpora in Kulgam district under the banner of MisSi MagHi, led by renowned crafts and textile designer, design educator, and researcher Shraddha Mehta.

The unique initiative aimed to train and educate local artisans in the intricate art of handcrafted woven, printed, painted, and ornamented textiles, covering every aspect from conceptualization to execution. The program focused on empowering artisans with both creative insight and technical expertise, helping them adapt to modern trends while preserving traditional crafts.

“I thrive on bringing creativity and technical finesse together to create captivating designs, art, crafts, and projects for artisans,” said Shraddha Mehta, who has over seven years of experience, including her work with the United Nations Development Programs and as an empanelled designer under the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Mehta emphasized the importance of staying updated with emerging industry trends and encouraged artisans to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional craft design. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of artisans from Ashmuji, who engaged in hands-on sessions and interactive discussions.

Program assistants Mudasir Ahmad and Aarif Ahmad, along with artisan and group leader Ruhie Akhter, expressed gratitude to Shraddha Mehta for her dedication and for providing the training program free of cost to the artisan community.

Shraddha also called upon relevant government departments to extend their cooperation to such initiatives and help strengthen the artisan economy in the region.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, leaving behind a renewed sense of hope, inspiration, and commitment towards uplifting the artisan community of Ashmuji.
