Islamia College conducts two-day National Conference on Innovations in Chemical and Material Sciences

Srianagr: Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar organized a prestigious two-day National Conference on “Innovations in Chemical & Material Sciences for Sustainable Development” in the College campus in collaboration with the J&K, Department of Science & Technology drawing participation from eminent scientists, academicians, researchers, and students from across the Country between 25th -26th June 2025.

The inaugural session was presided over by Shantmanu, IAS, Financial Commissioner (Add. Chief Secretary) to the Government Higher Education Department, UT of Jammu and Kashmir. Shantmanu was the Chief Guest & the Chief Patron of the Conference. In his presidential address, he emphasized the pivotal role of scientific innovation in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable resource management.

He highlighted the significance of fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation in chemical and material sciences to meet the sustainable development goals in the Country. Besides, Shantmanu, IAS, Financial Commissioner (Add. Chief Secretary) to the Government Higher Education Department, released Souvenir and College Newsletter in the inaugural session of the Conference. Professor Javed Naim Agrewala, IIT Ropar, Punjab, a distinguished scientist & Professor and Dean Research, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Punjab, delivered a crisp keynote address focusing on the chemical innovation and material technology for environmental resilience. Director Finance, Govt. of J&K, (UT ) Abdul Majeed Bhat graced the inaugural session of the Conference and shared the dais with the Chief Guest.

Other distinguished speakers include Professor Ramendra Pratap, University of Delhi, Professor Farukh Arjumand, AMU, Aligarh, Dr. Mahipal Yadav, University of Delhi and Professor Sartaj Tabassum, AMU Aligarh. Besides, several prominent scientists, research scholars and invited speakers from reputed institutions to deliver technical talks on topics ranging from nano-materials, green chemistry, catalysis, and renewable energy to biodegradable polymers and eco-friendly industrial practices during two-day national conference at Islamia College.

Principal of the host College, Professor (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf in her welcome address, said that the conference will focus on “Innovations in Chemical and Material Sciences for Sustainable Development” and will bring together leading scientists, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements in research and mitigation strategies for sustainable development. Dr. Sameer Kaul, Head, Department of Information Technology, ICSC presented the overview of the College. Dr. Abid Banday, Organizing Secretary of the conference introduced the theme of the conference and anchored the inaugural session. Dr.Banday said that the conference will focus on several areas in chemical sciences like, Green Chemistry, Nanomaterials and Nano Chemistry, Biodegradable Plastics and Polymer Composites, Nano electronics, Drug Designing and Pharmacology & many more.

He underscored that the main objective of this conference lies in sharing recent advancements and innovations in chemical and material sciences and explore sustainable development through novel materials and chemical processes. Over 30 research papers shall be presented in technical sessions spread across two days, offering a dynamic platform for young researchers and postgraduate students to showcase their work. The conference also featured interactive Q&A during technical sessions to enhance academic engagement. The staff Secretary of the host College, Dr. Taulat Qayoom, thanked all dignitaries, delegates, and student volunteers for their contributions and cooperation in making the event a grand success.

On the first day of the conference, two technical sessions were covered under the themes “Advances in drug design & medicine development”, which was chaired by Professor Javid Hussain, Head & Dean Biological Sciences, ICSC. The speakers of the session were Professor Javed Naim Agrewala, IIT Ropar, Punjab and Professor Farukh Arjumand, AMU Aligarh.

The other technical session was covered under the theme “Chemical Innovations and Sustainability which was chaired by Professor Sartaj Tabassum, AMU Aligarh and the speakers of the session were Professor Geer Mohammad Ishaq from the Department of Pharmacology, University of Kashmir and Professor Mahipal Yadav from Delhi University, who delivered his presentation through online mode. Spokesperson of the College Dr. Syed Untoo, expressed hope that the conference outcomes will pave the way for future innovations and research partnerships.
