Srinagar: Police in Handwara have booked a “habitual drug peddler” under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and lodged him in jail.

The accused Feroz Ahmad Khan, son of Late Abdul Ahad Khan of Panditpora Kralgund, has been repeatedly involved in narcotics trafficking despite facing multiple FIRs. His persistent criminal activities posed a serious threat to public safety, particularly endangering the youth of the area.

After pursuing the material evidence brought on record for its analysis, the detention of the accused under PIT NDPS Act was subsequently approved by the competent authority. This preventive detention is a targeted measure to incapacitate chronic offenders and disrupt the local narcotics supply chain, police said.

Meanwhile, a drug peddler was arrested in Budgam.

Police said 14.7 kgs of poppy straw-like substance and ₹18,640 in cash and two mobile phones were recovered from Ghulam Rasool Beigh, son of Mohammad Abdullah Beigh, resident of Dreygam, following which he was arrested.

Two drug peddlers, hailing from Bihar, were arrested after 1.638 kg of ganja was seized from them in Samba district, police said.

Ramparvesh Mandal of Bajura in Gaya district and Nandan Kumar of Pashroha in Khagaria district were intercepted by a police party near their rented accommodation in Bari Brahmana area. It led to the recovery of the contraband, a police spokesperson said.

An FIR under various sections of the NDPS Act has been registered against the arrested duo, he added.
