Two militants killed, two Army men injured in ongoing Shopian gunfight

Shopain: Amid intense violent clashes, two militants have been killed in an ongoing gunfight in Kundalan village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday.

Official sources said that two unidentified militants believed to be local militants have been killed in the an ongoing gunfight.

“The gunfight is going on and two militants killed so are believed to locals while as two foreign militants are still engaged,” the official said.

Clashes between protesters and government forces erupted near the encounter site in Shopian.

Government forces resorted to tear smoke shelling on protesters who pelted stones on them near the encounter site in Kundalan village of Shopian district, sources said.

Several civilians were injured during the clashes .One of the youth was hit by bullet in his leg, eyewitnesses said.

Reports said that youth took to streets and hurled stones at the forces deployed in the village following a gunfight. The forces responded by firing pellets and tear gas shells to chase away the protesters.

Meanwhile, clashes also erupted in Pulwama town .

Eyewitness told Kashmir Images that scores of youth took to streets in Pulwama town after the news of death of two militants in Kundalan, Shopian spread in the Pulwama areas.

Forces resorted teargas shelling to disperse the protesters.

Earlier, Mohammad Ishaq Naikoo, father of Zeenat Naikoo ,who had just joined militant ranks, died after hearing that his son was trapped in the gun battle at Kundalan village.

Two soldiers of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), were injured in the initial firing at Kundalan.

The injured soldiers have been shifted to army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar.

Earlier, the youth took to streets and hurled rocks at the forces deployed in the village following a gunfight. The forces responded by firing live ammunition, pellets and tear gas to chase away the protesters resulting in injuries to at least twenty youth.

On today early morning, a joint team of army’s 34 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Kundalan which resulted into the encounter.

Soon after the encounter, massive clashes were witnessed in the Shopian and in parts of Pulwama district.
