Islamia College organizes Disaster Management Awareness Program for students

Srinagar: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit-III of Islamia College of Science and Commerce, Srinagar, in collaboration with the Civil Defence Department, Srinagar, organized a one-day Disaster Management Awareness Program aimed at equipping students, staff, and faculty with essential knowledge and skills to handle emergency situations.

At the outset, Principal of the host college, Professor (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, in her welcome address, emphasized the importance of institutional partnerships in disaster preparedness. She highlighted the evolving nature of disasters due to various factors and the pivotal role of technology in improving disaster response mechanisms. Dr. Tehmina also underscored the coordination between the college and the Deputy Controller of the Civil Defence Department, Srinagar, stressing the importance of preparedness in mitigating the impact of disasters.

The program witnessed active participation from faculty, students, and NSS volunteers, who were engaged in multiple training sessions designed to enhance their disaster response capabilities. Professionals from the Civil Defence Department, Mr. Mudasir Ahmad Khan and Mr. Irshad Ahmad, conducted sessions covering key aspects of disaster management, including risk assessment, emergency response, and recovery strategies.

The trainers gave practical demonstrations and trained students and faculty in DRCAB (Disaster Response and Casualty Assessment Basics), CPR, and basic life support techniques. The hands-on sessions also included first-aid procedures and evacuation drills, providing participants with experiential learning.

Tariq Ahmad Shah, In-charge, Civil Defence Training, Srinagar, gave an overview of the training sessions and elaborated on the role of the Civil Defence Department. His presentation encouraged interactive discussions and deepened participants’ understanding of disaster management.

Dr. Nusrat Parveen, NSS Officer of the host college, expressed satisfaction over the successful conduct of the training program and thanked the instructors and resource persons from the Civil Defence Department of J&K for offering students and NSS volunteers a valuable platform to engage in disaster preparedness.

When contacted, Dr. Syed A. Untoo, Media and Publicity Secretary of the institution, stated that Islamia College is committed to fostering a culture of safety and resilience among its students and staff. He added that the initiative highlights the dedication of both the college and civil authorities in promoting awareness and preparedness among the youth.
