Heatwave conditions persist in Kashmir, Srinagar sizzles at 33.2 degrees Celsius

Srinagar: The intense heatwave continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, with all the stations across the valley recording above normal temperatures.

According to the details shared by the Meteorological (MeT) Department, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius, which was 7.8 degrees Celsius above normal during this time of the year.

The details reveal that Qazigund recorded a day temperature of 32.5 degrees Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded 32.4 degrees Celsius.

In Pahalgam, mercury settled at 28.8 degrees Celsius while Kokernag recorded 31.5 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a maximum temperature of 24.0 degrees Celsius.

Jammu division witnessed a slight improvement on Friday with Jammu city recording a day temperature of 38.2 degrees Celsius.

Banihal, Batote, Katra and Bhaderwah recorded a maximum temperature of 29.2, 27.7, 35.2 and 31.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad has predicted an isolated heat wave in J&K, saying that generally hot and dry weather is expected with the possibility of a brief spell of light rain at isolated places mainly towards late afternoon till May 26.

Ahmad said that from May 27 to 31, the weather would remain generally hot & dry with the possibility of a brief spell of light rain and thundershower at scattered places.

The MeT in its advisory said that a rise in maximum temperature by 1-2 degrees Celsius is expected with the possibility of a heatwave at scattered places of Kashmir division till May 23 and fall by 2 to 3 degrees thereafter. (KNO)
