Srinagar: Police on Sunday said that they have detained social media handlers who have spread false information regarding Ajas encounter in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

In a handout, police, according to GNS, said that the Bandipora police had received information through multiple sources that “some persons have circulated false and fabricated narratives” through their social media handles regarding an encounter at Kulnar Bazipora Ajas on April 24, 2025.

In this connection, Bandipora Police have registered a criminal case against all those social media account holders who have circulated these “false stories” on social media platforms.

“The criminalised act of all those involved persons has endangered the country’s security scenario and has a tendency of creating law and order problems in the region,” the statement said.

Accordingly, taking cognizance of the act, police have registered a case — FIR NO.71/25 u/s 152 BNS ,66 (f) IT Act — in Police Station Bandipora and investigation of the case has been started.

So for few involved persons have been apprehended for their involvement in this “criminal act” for questioning purpose, and further action shall be initiated as warranted under Law, it said.

Police has urged the social media users to act responsibly and refrain from activities that violate legal and ethical norms.

Stringent legal action, including prosecution under relevant laws, will be taken against those found misusing digital platforms for unlawful purposes, reads the statement.
