Srinagar: Shab-e-Miraj, a significant Islamic event commemorating Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) ascension to heavens, was observed with religious fervor across Kashmir on Monday-Tuesday night.

Miraj, also known as Qisra, is observed annually on the 27th day of the month of Rajab in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar to commemorate the Prophet’s (SAW) miraculous ascent to paradise.

While mosques across Kashmir echoed with commendations to Allah and his Prophet (SAW) during the nightlong prayers, the biggest gathering on the occasion was witnessed at Asar-e-Sharif Dargah Hazratbal, housing the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

The nightlong prayers at Hazratbal shrine began late last evening, drawing thousands of pilgrims from across the valley.

The holy relic displayed for the public shortly after the Fajar (pre-dawn) prayers, amid the recitation of Durood-o-Azkar, an invocation Muslims make by reciting specific Arabic phrases to praise the last Messenger of Allah (SAW).

A sizable number of women and children had also gathered at the shrine to attend the nightlong prayers. The marketplaces surrounding Srinagar’s main Muslim shrine were decked with vibrant buntings and banners.

Similar gatherings were witnessed at other shrines in Srinagar including Asar-e-Shareef Kalashpora, Jenab Sahab Soura, Khanqah-e-Maula, Ziarat Peer Dastgeer Sahab (RA) Khanyar and Sarai Payeen, Syed Yaqoob Sahab (RA) Sonwar, Khawaja Naqshband Sahab (RA) and Ziarat Makhdoom Sahib (RA).

Special prayers were held at local mosques as well where Islamic scholars delivered lectures on the teachings of the Prophet (SAW).

Reports of similar congregational gatherings were also received from north and south Kashmir including Bandipora, Baramulla Kupwara, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam and Anantnag districts.

The administration had made arrangements for the devotees at Hazratbal, while medical camps had been established around the shrine on the occasion. Traffic Police had issued a route plan for the smooth traffic movement.
