Srinagar: Police have arrested seven drug peddlers and detained another one under PIT-NDPS Act, an official handout informed Monday.
It said in Kulgam, at Chawalgam two kgs of poppy straw-like contraband substance was recovered from one Mashooq Ahmad Hilla, son of Abdul Rashid Hilla of Vesbatpota, Kulgam. He was arrested.
At Janbazpora Baramulla, 288 banned capsules were recovered from one Aijaz Ahmad Sofi, son of Ghulam Hassan, resident of Chakloo. Sofi was also arrested.
On the Sirhama link road in Anantnag, one Abdul Rehman Mir, son-in-law of Mohammad Akbar Nengroo, of Sirhama was arrested after 1.270 kg of cannabis powder was recovered from his bag.
Police also raided the residence of Javid Ahmad Padder, son of Ghulam Ahmad Padder, at Pethnambal Mattan, and recovered 5 kgs of cannabis powder from the said house. Padder was subsequently arrested.
At Galander Crossing in Pampore, three persons — Owais Gull, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Drangbal; Tariq Ahmed Sheikh, son of Ghulam Qadir of Tulbagh; and Mushtaq Ahmed Mir, son of Abdul Khaliq Mir of Namblabal – riding a scooty (JK13E-7562) were arrested after 8.160 kgs of grinded poppy straw-like substance was recovered from their possession. Their scooty was also seized.
Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations for further investigations, police said.
Police also informed that in Kupwara, a “notorious” drug peddler Mohammad Shafi Sheikh alias Shafi Tractor, son of Ghulam Hassan Sheikh of Sheikhpora, Trehgam, was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS), 1988. The accused was involved in multiple cases of drug trafficking, under Section 8/20 NDPS Act, police said.
The detention warrant was issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and accordingly the accused has been lodged in District Jail Udhampur, police said.
