Jammu: Hundreds of Congress leaders and workers led by JKPCC chief Tariq Hameed Karra today took out a protest march towards Raj Bhawan raising slogans against Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks against B.R. Ambedkar.
The protesters sought Shah’s apology besides seeking the arrest of Gautam Adani. They also criticised the central government for the alarming situation in Manipur and sought restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
A party spokesman said that a strong contingent of police stopped the peaceful protestors at Danis Gate on Residency Road.
“After a brief insistence by the Congress leaders with the police officers, the JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra advised the workers to agree to the request of the police authorities and to hold a peaceful sit-in on the Residency Road for some time,” said the spokesman.
Speaking on the occasion, Karra said that the Home Minister should apologise to the nation for “insulting” remarks against the father of the Constitution, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar.
He said that his utterances against Dr. Ambedkar reflect the mindset of the BJP towards the father of the Constitution and has hurt the countrymen.
He said that the Modi government is trying to divert the attention of the nation to save Gautam Adani, who has been booked in the United States.
Karra said that the Modi government has failed to control the situation in Manipur which is very alarming and innocent people have been killed but the government is maintaining criminal silence.
On the issue of restoration of statehood to J&K, JKPCC chief lashed out at the central government for deliberate delay in granting the same despite promises on the floor of the Parliament, before the Supreme Court and in the public meetings.
“People are watching the betrayal of the Modi government on this issue,” he said, adding that Congress will intensify its struggle in the days to come if statehood is not granted and asked the cadre to be ready for the same.
