Srinagar/Baramulla, Jun 22: A policeman injured in a militant attack in Kak Sarai area of Srinagar last week succumbed to injuries today, police said.

Head Constable Habib-ul-lah, who was injured after militants opened fire on a government forces party which was carrying out random vehicle checking at Kak Sarai area of the city on June 15, succumbed to injuries at SKIMS Hospital here this morning, a police spokesman said.

He said a wreath laying ceremony was held today at District Police Lines Srinagar to pay homage to the slain cop.

Civil and police officers led by Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the slain policeman, the spokesman said, adding the officials from the civil administration and other security agencies were present.

Head Constable Habib-ul-lah was the lone bread-earner of his family and is survived by two sons and three daughters – one of them aged 21 years whose marriage was scheduled next week, the other two are studying in class 10 and class 6- besides wife and aged parents, police said.

Meanwhile, pall of gloom descended in his native Bomai village in the outskirts of  Sopore town today when the dead body of Habibullah reached there.

“See it is the people of Kashmir who are getting killed from both sides. We want an end to this bloodshed,” said Ghulam Rasool, an elderly resident of Bomai.

“Be it policeman or the militant, both are Muslims and Kashmiri; so why should we allow this loss of precious and innocent lives. Let people at the helm of affairs realize that violence and bloodshed will never bring peace,” a local youth Bilal Ahmed added.

Hundreds of people across the Zaingeer belt reached the home of slain cop to pay condolences and express solidarity with the bereaved family.

Witnesses said that hundreds of wailing men, women and children thronged the residence of slain cop to participate in his last rites.
