Five children among 8 of family killed after car falls into gorge in Anantnag

Srinagar: Eight members of a family, including five children, were killed when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday, officials said.

A policeman, two women and five children aged between six and 16 are among the dead, they said.

The victims were travelling from Kishtwar towards Marwah via the Sinthan Top when their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at Daksum, officials said.

The family of eight died on the spot, they said.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the tragic road accident.

In a condolence message, the LG said: “I am deeply saddened to learn about the loss of precious lives in an unfortunate road accident in Daksum, Anantnag today. My thoughts and prayers are with bereaved family members during this hour of grief.  I have issued instructions to the District Administration to provide all necessary assistance to the affected family.”

Member of Parliament Anantnag-Rajouri and senior National Conference leader Mian Altaf Ahmad in a statement, termed the incident as most unfortunate, shocking and heartbreaking and expressed anguish and pain over the tragic incident.

Mian Altaf expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and prayed for peace for the departed souls.

Apni Party president Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also expressed grief over the tragic road accident.

In his statement, Bukhari said, “I am deeply grieving over this tragedy. It is painful to learn that among the eight deceased members of a single family, there are two women and five children aged between 6 and 16. I find myself at a loss for words to express my grief and sorrow over this tragedy. May Almighty Allah grant the departed souls the highest place in Jannah. And, may Allah give the much-needed patience to the kith and kin of the victims to bear the pain of this inconsolable and irreparable loss.”
