Distinguished researcher Dr. Kasturi Saha delivers lecture on ‘Wildlife and Biodiversity’ at Islamia College

Srinagar: In continuation of the series of events at the college, the Postgraduate Department of Zoology at Islamia College hosted Dr. Kasturi Saha, a distinguished researcher from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India.

Dr. Saha delivered a lecture on the critical issues of wildlife, biodiversity, and conservation, encouraging students to engage in critical thinking.

The event was inaugurated by Professor Javid Hussain, Head of the PG Department of Zoology, who welcomed Dr. Saha. The lecture’s broader theme focused on bridging the gaps between science and society.

Professor (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, Principal of the College, commended the organizers, emphasizing the importance of such lectures in fostering awareness about global challenges and developing problem-solving capacities among students.

She highlighted that addressing global issues requires global consensus and a broader perspective, and reaffirmed Islamia College’s commitment to impacting society through wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Saha’s presentation focused on the relationship between science and society, drawing on her research findings on bat signaling, katydids, and prey-predator interactions. She emphasized the need for integrating scientific inquiry with sensibilities to develop a holistic approach to solving complex problems. Dr. Saha is currently working as a research consultant with Wildlife Research Conservation, India.

The Q&A session, moderated by Professor Sajad Sarvar, highlighted the relevance of bringing experts from across the country to enrich the academic environment at the college. Professor Zahida Mehraj, the senior faculty member from the Department of Zoology, remarked that such lectures not only gather the brightest minds to discuss critical issues but also inspire students and faculty to pursue excellence and innovation in their respective fields.
