The incident, according to witnesses, occurred around 12:45 PM when the elderly man was run over by a police armoured vehicle near Firdous Cinema here.

The deceased, they said, was crossing over to the other side of the road, when a police armored vehicle struck him, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately rushed to SKIMS Soura by the police but couldn’t survive.

The deceased man was identified as 75-year-old Abdul Salam, a resident of Hawal.

The accident sparked protests in the area with those having witnessed the incident seeking action against the erring driver. The protesters blocked the main road severely hampering the traffic movement on the busy stretch for about an hour.

The protesters dispersed after some senior police officials arrived on the scene and assured stern legal action against the driver in case he was found guilty.

A formal case in this regard has been filed at Zadibal police station and an investigation initiated.

A senior police official told ‘Kashmir Images’ that the team investigating the case, besides reviewing the CCTV footage, would record statements of the witnesses present at the time of the incident.

“It was an accident, as no one would deliberately do such a thing. A case has been filed in this regard, and we’ll investigate how the accident happened which resulted in the death of a pedestrian,” he added.
