SRINAGAR: Asserting that the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency has had the lowest voter turnout till 2019, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar Dr Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat on Saturday said the administration through Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Program will ensure large turnout for the Lok Sabha elections.

DC Srinagar further said that a large turnout of voters, including those who are voting for the first time, is anticipated in the upcoming parliamentary elections, adding over two lakh new voters have been added to the final electoral roll.

SWEEP programs, Dr Bilal said are organized under the aegis of the Election Commission of India (ECI), a body mandated by the Constitution to oversee and manage elections in the country, and are aimed at raising awareness among the masses about the value of voting.

He said that SWEEP programs, which are carried out to guarantee high voter participation for the next elections, will go on till Election Day.

“Srinagar till 2019 and in the past has recorded the lowest turnout in Parliamentary elections. The awareness programs under SWEEP are carried out to guarantee large turnout of voters for the upcoming Parliamentary elections,” DC Srinagar told reporters on the sidelines of a function held under SWEEP at city centre Lal Chowk here.

The program, which was conducted to raise awareness about the significance of voting, saw a sizable turnout of participants, including students from various schools.

In light of the impending elections, Dr. Bilal encouraged everyone to vote in huge numbers so that they can realize the importance of their votes, especially those who were casting their first ballots.
