The Section in the Indian Penal Code lays down the punishment for acid attacks. The minimum punishment as per the law in such cases can be 10 years imprisonment which can extend up to life imprisonment with a fine.

The quantum order with regard to punishment in the case will be announced on March 05, 2024.

A case FIR No 8/2022 had been registered at Police Station Nowata in 2022 in the case.

The accused number two, M Salim Kumar, has been convicted in case for commission of offence under section 336 IPC.

According to this section whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or the personal safety of others, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months or with fine which may extend to two hundred and fifty rupees, or with both.

The court said that the prosecution has proved the case beyond any reasonable doubt.

In February of 2022, police had arrested three persons, including the main accused, Rather, for throwing acid on the young woman. A Special Investigation Team headed by the then Superintendent of Police, North Srinagar, had been formed to investigate the matter.

Police had arrested Rather and as per prosecution story, the initial investigation revealed that Rather was having interest in the girl. Since she had rejected his engagement proposal, Rather had been allegedly stalking her. He had allegedly committed the offence of throwing acid on the girl.
