National Sports Awards: Shami, para-archer Sheetal draw rousing applause at ceremony
FacebookTwitterWhatsapp

In a historic moment, 16-year-old para-archer Sheetal Devi was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award by President Droupadi Murmu on January 9, 2024. Born with phocomelia, a rare congenital disorder resulting in underdeveloped limbs, Sheetal defied the odds to become the first international para-archery champion without upper limbs.

Sheetal’s remarkable achievements include clinching two gold and a silver medal at the Hangzhou Para Asian Games 2023, etching her name in the annals of para-archery history. Her journey from a small village in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, to the pinnacle of success is a testament to her indomitable spirit.

Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Sheetal, born on January 10, 2007, exhibited athletic prowess from a young age. Climbing trees became more than a pastime; it became the foundation for her strong upper body, a crucial asset in her future archery endeavors.

Enter Matt Stutzman, who achieved silver at the London 2012 Paralympics using his legs. Drawing inspiration from Stutzman’s success, Sheetal’s coaches tailored a unique approach, enabling her to master the art of para-archery.

Sheetal Devi’s story resonates as a beacon of determination, transcending physical limitations. Her Arjuna Award not only recognizes her sporting prowess but also symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit. Sheetal’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and underscores the power of perseverance in overcoming challenges.
