UT-level seminar on scientific beekeeping commences at Kashmir Haat Srinagar

SRINAGAR: A two-day UT-level seminar on scientific beekeeping organized by the Agriculture Department Kashmir and sponsored by the National Bee Board (NBB) under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) commenced today at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar.

The seminar was inaugurated by Vice Chairperson Khadi and Village Industries Development Board (KVIB), Dr. Hina Shafi Bhat.

In her inaugural address, the VC KVIB highlighted the role of modern technology in present-day Beekeeping. She asked the young educated farmers to come forward and take benefit from the government schemes in the field of Beekeeping.

She informed the participants that (KVIB) is providing training to young entrepreneurs in small-scale agriculture Cottage industries like Beekeeping. She said that adopting beekeeping in addition to general farming compliments the overall income of the farm-operating families.

Dr. Hina also underscored the importance of Beekeeping bi-products. She impressed upon the stakeholders, and concerned officers to organise awareness programmes for the farmers at the village level so that more and more farmers could be attracted towards this venture. She said that Kashmir Honey is world famous for its quality and the need of the hour is that all the necessary steps are taken to increase the production.

Joint Director Agriculture Inputs Mrs Tabassum Naz, Joint Director Agriculture Extension G.M Dhobi, Assistant Entomology and a number of beekeepers also expressed their views regarding the subject.

Earlier, Assistant Entomologist Dr Qazi Showkat gave a detailed presentation of various interventions by the department for the promotion of beekeeping in the Kashmir division.

A large number of beekeepers are attending the two-day event.
