First one, with Kargil epicentre was of 5.7 magnitude

Srinagar: Within an hour, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh felt five back-to-back tremors on Monday afternoon. However, no loss of life or property was reported.

Two more tremors were felt late in the evening.

Reports suggested that five earthquakes with different epicentres jolted Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh from 3:48 PM to 4:44 PM this afternoon.

However, no reports of damage were received from anywhere till this report was filed.

Officials of the meteorological department said that five earthquakes jolted J&K and Ladakh within a span of just one hour having epicentres at Zanskar, Kargil and Kishtwar.

However, Kashmir Weather, run by a local expert Faizan Arif posted on X that two more jolts were felt around 9.13 pm and 9.36 pm with 3.1 and 3.4 magnitude respectively.

The late evening tremors had their origin in Kishtwar with depth of 10 kms.

The Kashmir Weather posted on X that first earthquake hit Ladakh and J&K around 3.48 pm with a magnitude of 5.7 and epicentre, Kargil.

Another jolt was of 5.1 magnitude epicentre Kishtwar around 4.01 pm.

Third occurred within a minute with 3.8 magnitude, while as forth jolt came at 4.18 pm with magnitude 3.6 and epicentre Kishtwar.

At around 4.44, the fifth jolt was felt with magnitude 3.4 and two more jolts were felt around 9.13 pm and 9. 36 pm with magnitude 3.1 and 3.4.

There were no immediate reports of any casualty or damage, sources said.

According to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS), the 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred at 3.48 pm and its epicentre was Kargil.

The depth of the tremor was 10 km below the surface at a latitude of 33.41 degrees and longitude of 76.70 degrees, it said.
