Srinagar, Jun 3: Army on Sunday claimed that it foiled an infiltration bid in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district by killing a militant.

An army official said that a joint team of Army’s 4/4 GR and 103 bn BSF posted near Ustad Post adjacent to Manjeet Post in Keran sector along the Line of Control (LoC) noticed some suspicious movement near the fence today in the afternoon.

“The army fired some shots which were retaliated by the infiltrators. The militants fired indiscriminately and in the gunfight that ensued, an infiltrator was killed so far,” he said.

The official said that the body of the slain has been recovered along with an AK-47 and four magazines from the gunfight site.

“We are ascertaining his identity and outfit affiliation,” the official said.

A senior police officer also confirmed the killing of the militant.

When reports last came in, the operation was going on in the area.

Meanwhile, official sources said that additional reinforcement was rushed to the area and a massive search operation with the help of sniffer dogs was launched to trace out the other members of the group.

Meanwhile, two of the five militants killed by the Army last month while they were trying to sneak into Tangdhar sector were on Sunday identified as locals by their families.

The Army had said that the five militants were trying to infiltrate the Line of Control (LoC) when they were killed by troops on May 25.

While the Army said it had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the slain militants, the exact identity of the slain militants had not been established.

The militants were buried by locals who had taken their photographs which were later circulated on social media.

Based on the photographic evidences, two families from Pulwama and Kulgam districts claimed the two were their kin.

One of the militants was identified as Shiraz Ahmad of Lajoora in Pulwama and the other was identified as Mudasir Ahmad of Parigam village in Kulgam district.

Shiraz was missing since September 2017 and Mudasir had gone missing since July 2016.

The families have urged the Jammu and Kashmir Police to exhume the bodies so that they are given a proper burial.

According to the police, the bodies are now likely to be exhumed and DNA tests will be conducted to establish the claim of the families.
