Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Chairman Agriculture and Horticulture Committee Javed Dar has said that addressing the challenges faced by agriculture and horticulture sectors is important to the overall development of J&K and the improved welfare of its rural poor.

He, according to the NC spokesperson, said this while chairing the party’s Agriculture & Horticulture committee meeting at the party headquarters in Nawa-e-Subha, Srinagar. While addressing the members of the committee he said that the objective of the meeting was to find solutions to enhance agricultural profitability and ensure the welfare of farmers.

He also emphasised on facilitating agricultural diversification to higher-value commodities, developing markets, agricultural credit, improving water resources and irrigation, enhancing agricultural productivity, and competitiveness, sustaining the environment and future agricultural productivity, insurance, and better mobility and storage facilities.

Committee members including Muhammad Khalil Bandh, Abdul Majeed Bhat Larmi, Showkat Hussain Ganaie, Khawaja Yaqoob Wani, and Irshad Ahmad Kar attended the meeting.

Issues concerning the horticulture and agriculture sectors were discussed threadbare during the breadth of the meeting. The distinguished committee members offered their valuable insights and suggestions.

The committee members jointly called out the J&K administration for lack of support to the region’s farmers amid rising challenges caused by climate change.

The party leaders expressed disappointment with the administration saying it has left people at the mercy of fate. The party urged the lieutenant governor to provide adequate compensation to affected fruit growers to help them recover their losses and also immediately implement the Crop Insurance Scheme.
