Snowfall, rains continue in parts of J&K for 2nd consecutive day

Srinagar: Intermittent rainfall continued to lash plains of J&K for the second straight day while the upper reaches received fresh snowfall on Tuesday, bringing down the mercury further across the Union Territory.

The major roads including Srinagar-Jammu highway, Mughal Road and others remained closed for vehicular movement.

Reports said that Sadhna Top has received a snowfall of nearly one foot till today while Afarwat hills experienced a snowfall of six inches today.

Gulmarg recorded around an inch of fresh snow today while Zojjila received six inches.

The local Meteorological department (MeT) said that Srinagar received a precipitation of 20.9 mm till Tuesday morning while Qazigund received a rainfall of 47.4 mm. Pahalgam recorded rainfall of 27.4 mm while the highest precipitation of 52.0 mm was recorded at Kokernag.

According to the details, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 11.6 degree Celsius while Anantnag recorded 9.2 degree Celsius today. Ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a maximum temperature of 2.0 degree Celsius while Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 9.1 degree Celsius.

The continuous wet spell has forced the closure of major roads including Srinagar-Jammu national highway and Mughal Road. Other roads including the one between Bandipora and Gurez, Sinthan Top- Road, Sadnatop-Tangdar Road, and Kishtwar Road also continue to remain closed due to fresh snowfall.

Meanwhile, Director MeT, Sonum Lotus said that the weather conditions would improve from Wednesday.

“The weather is expected to turn pleasant from tomorrow as there is no forecast of any wet spell till October 24,” he said, adding that the temperature would also start increasing gradually from tomorrow. (With inputs from KNO)
