Srinagar: After a dry spell of several months, the winter in Kashmir has knocked on Kashmir doors, giving a miss to the much-desired autumn as the upper reaches of Gulmarg witnessed the first snowfall bringing mercury down drastically and adding to it, late evening showers in Srinagar did the rest.

The upper reaches of the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir received the season’s first snowfall as prolonged dry weather continued elsewhere in the Valley on Sunday, officials said.

Reports said that upper reaches in Gulmarg, particularly the mount Affarvat received the first spell of snowfall on Sunday afternoon bringing down the temperature temperatures drastically.

People from the area told Kashmir Images that though it was a brief spell of rain in upper areas of Tangmarg, the snowfall at Affarvat left the entire area shivering.

Though the tourists staying at Gulmarg enjoyed the chill, locals were worried about their crops and fruit.

The showers in Srinagar started around 10 pm and were continuing when this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 25.7°C, which was 0.6°C below normal for the summer capital of J&K.

Jammu recorded a high of 32.2°C and it was 0.3°C below normal for the winter of J&K, the official added.
