Srinagar: A deputy superintendent of police was arrested in Srinagar following a warrant from a local court, officials said on Thursday.

Some documents and electronic devices, sources said, the police party from the Nowgam police station also seized a laptop during searches at his residence.

The officer was booked under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code, including sections 193 (giving false evidence) and 201 (destruction of evidence).

A senior police officer told ‘Kashmir Images’ that Sheikh was attached to the office of the Special Director General (DG) Crime, in March this year, following his suspension on the charges of corruption.

Taking serious note of the offences against Adil, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under an officer of the rank of superintendent of police (SP).

“In view of the larger ramifications in this case, a Special Investigation Team headed by SP South City has been constituted for investigation of this case,” the police said.

The arrested officer, police said, besides corruption, is also charged with professional misconduct.

Pertinently, a formal case (FIR no 149 of 2023) under Prevention of Corruption Act 201, 193, 7 and 7A besides IPC sections 167, 210, 218, 221 stand registered against him at Nowgam police station.
