In a statement, police said that the accused individuals were operating as middlemen, arranging marriage. They used photos of young women to lure men into their trap.

These fraudsters would send the pictures of beautiful young women to their victims (men) and somehow convince them and their families that they could solemnize their marriage if they paid the Mehar (dower) money upfront. This was their way of looting the gullible, police said.

Police said that they had managed to accumulate a significant sum of Rs 7.38 lakhs from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of Mehar payments and commission.

The accused who have now been arrested have been identified as Laal Hussain, son of Mir Mohammad, resident of Ward No 06, Jaranwala Gali, Rajouri; Irshada Begum, daughter of Gulzar Ahmad Gojer, resident of Mori Kalakot, Rajouri; Abdul Rahman Rather, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of Dar Mohalla, Drang, Budgam; and Abdul Khaliq Dar, son of Abdul Rahim Dar, resident of Gulabbagh, Pati Poshker, Khag Budgam.

A case has been registered under various sections of the IPC and a thorough investigation initiated, which led to the unearthing of the entire fraudulent operation, police said.

As of now, four individuals have been held in connection with this case, police added.
