Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Sunday flagged in a team of climbers that scaled Mount Nun and Kun, the tallest two peaks in the Union Territory, last month.

The mountaineering expedition team from Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS) set a record by becoming the first team to scale both Mount Nun and Mount Kun simultaneously, Colonel Hemchandra Singh, head of the institute, was quoted as saying by PTI.

“This team also set the record of scaling Mount Nun in just four days and Mount Kun in seven days, which is the shortest time for the respective peaks,” Col Singh added.

He said the aim of the expedition was to promote adventure tourism in Jammu and Kashmir and also provide better training for instructors and students at the JIM&WS.

The expedition consisted of seven climbers and 10 administrative staff.

While Mount Nun is located at a height of around 7,135 metres, its neighbour Mount Kun is 7,077-metre high.

Interacting with the mountaineers at Raj Bhawan, the LG lauded their grit, determination and accomplishment for creating a history by climbing twin peaks, an official press release said.

“This expedition led by Col Hem Chandra Singh has created many records and a proud moment for all mountaineering fraternity, J&K and our nation. It is not an ordinary adventure or a conquest but it shows our search for the unknown and pursuit of exploring the unexplored,” the LG said.

He said the exemplary courage and dedication of the expedition team will instill confidence in the young generation to take up new challenges, new opportunities and contribute to nation building.

“Magnificent mountains with their awe-inspiring presence, tough terrains teach us the timeless wisdom of tackling all challenges and odds in our journey. The expedition also symbolizes the Army’s resolve to protect the motherland, protect the interests of the people and to ensure peace and prosperity for all,” the LG observed.

“I am confident the courage, valour and heroic deeds of our mountaineers will continue to motivate us to build a better society and it will inspire generations to come,” he said.

The LG extended his best wishes to the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam and the mountaineers for their future endeavours.

Principal Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam expressed gratitude to the LG-led UT administration for the continuous support to the institute, the press release said.
