Srinagar: The 9th International Day of Yoga was celebrated with enthusiasm and gusto in keeping with the spirit of Yoga Day 2023 theme “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam” at various locations in Kashmir, with the primary objective to promote Yoga as a holistic practice for mental and physical wellbeing, officials said today.

Aimed at spreading awareness about the benefits of Yoga, the Indian Army organized yoga sessions for the troops deployed at far flung areas under extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain, PRO Defence said in a statement here.

“Yoga was also conducted in BB Cantt & Dal Lake in Srinagar along with other prominent places like Navyug Tunnel, Kaman Setu, and Haiderbaig.”

Civil administration and the local Kashmiri populace also joined hands with the Indian Army to make the event a grand success.

The successful conduct of the event across the Kashmir Valley demonstrates the resolve of the local populace to embrace the peace and tranquility of the region and present a picture of ‘Naya Kashmir’ to the world.

Meanwhile, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Wednesday said yoga is a tool for stress management and for improving combat efficiency as he complimented the soldiers and their families for incorporating the practice into their daily routine.

The General Officer Commanding-in-chief of Northern Command, speaking at a function organized at the command headquarters in Udhampur to observe the International Day of Yoga, commended the soldiers and their families’ use of yoga to combat psychological stress and fatigue in extremely high-altitude areas and harsh climatic conditions.

“Yoga is a prime tool for stress management and improvement of combat efficiency,” Lt Gen Dwivedi said.

Jammu-based Army PRO Lt Col Devender Anand said yoga is being promoted as a way of life in the Army, especially for the troops deployed in mountainous and high-altitude areas of the northern command.

“All ranks have imbibed it as a regime to boost their mental and physical health. The unique feat has been achieved by the units and formations of the command by organizing yoga at a large number of places,” he said.

Over 1,75,000 soldiers and 75,000 families participated in yoga sessions with great zeal and enthusiasm, he said, adding officers and other ranks of Udhampur Military Station participated in the event with enthusiasm.

Qualified yoga instructors were involved in the yoga sessions, he added.
