Srinagar: A three day orientation-cum-training workshop for all the District Child Protection Units (DCPU’s), Child Welfare Committees (CWC’s) and Juvenile Justice Boards (JJB’s) was today kick-started by Jammu and Kashmir Child Resource Centre here in Srinagar.

A statement issued here said that seen as one of the biggest initiatives by the Social Welfare Ministry, Jammu and Kashmir government, for ensuring implementation of Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) and Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act, the establishment of DCPU’s, CWC’s and JJB’s in the state will go a long way in translating the policies in reality on the ground.

The workshop has been organized in order to provide orientation-cum-training for the newly recruited DCPU’s, CWC’s and JJB’s of Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil. The three day workshop shall cover Management Information Services (MIS), Information Education and Communication (IEC) and comprehensive orientation on ICPS and JJ Act, said the statement.

As envisioned by Minister for Social Welfare, Sajad Gani Lone, the initiative intends to create and ensure an ecosystem where every child can live with equity, dignity, security and freedom and enjoy childhood to the fullest, said the statement, adding, the Minister has reiterated his vision for creating child rights regime in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and rolling out ICPS.

Stating that the establishment of Resource center like CRC was among the institutional and structural majors he was mostly concerned, the Minister has further added that such workshops go a long way in ensuring that the staff recruited for the purpose are well aware of the nuances of such sensitive policies and are best placed to deal with any arising situation.

Pertinent to mention that the Minister had been personally monitoring the child protection vertical in the department and believes that such initiatives were more relevant and also desperately needed in situations like Kashmir: “Both Children in Need of Care and Protection and particularly Children in Conflict with Law need immediate attention he always wants to invest in”, said an official of CRC.

In the inaugural session, Shafat Sultan, MD ICPS, Dr Fayaz Sheikh and Sana Javeid, Training Coordinators CRC, discussed and elaborated the need for orientation and trainings for all the functionaries of ICPS in order to realize the vision of the ministry with regard to child protection and child welfare in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

JKCRC has roped in top child rights specialists including Supreme Court Lawyers, Anant Kumar Asthana experts from UNICEF-Delhi, Rajesh eminent lawyers and professors from Kashmir which includes Faisal Qadri and Dr Javaid Rashid for the orientation-cum-training workshop.

A total of 130 participants are taking part in the three day workshop which is scheduled to conclude on May, 30.
