Srinagar: Security forces on Tuesday shot dead two “terrorists” near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Machhal area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said here.
The Kashmir Zone Police announced the development on Twitter but did not clarify if the slain were infiltrators or locals.
“Two (02) terrorists have been neutralised in a joint operation of Army and Kupwara Police in Dobanar Machhal area (LoC) of Kupwara district. Search still continues,” it tweeted.
Sharing details of the operation, Defence PRO in a statement said that on specific intelligence inputs about likely infiltration from Macchal Sector received from police and other intelligence agencies including Military Intelligence, a joint operation by Army and police was planned in area Doga Nar during preceding night and multiple ambushes were laid along the likely routes of infiltration.
“On 13 June at around 1300 hours, ambush teams observed two heavily armed terrorists crossing the LoC. They were engaged by ambush teams. Fire firefight ensued resulting in elimination of both infiltrating terrorists. Identity of the terrorists and their tanzeem affiliation is being ascertained. Two AK series rifles, four hand-grenades and other war-like stores were recovered,” the statement said.
