Baramulla/Srinagar: Two terrorists of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Thursday, police said.

Acting on specific input about the presence of terrorists in the Wanigam Payeen in Kreeri area of the district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there early Thursday morning, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

In the exchange of firing, two terrorists were killed, the official said, adding that they were identified as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Shah from Shopian district. Both had joined the terrorist ranks in the month of March 2023 and were affiliated with LeT. Further Investigation going on, a top cop said.

Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition, including an AK 47 rifle and a pistol, were recovered from the site of the encounter, he said.

This is the second encounter in the last 24 hours in the Valley after a brief lull.

Two terrorists were killed when an encounter took place after the security forces foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in Machil sector of Kupwara district on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a policeman was injured after terrorists opened fire at security forces in Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.

They said terrorists attacked a security forces’ party in the Bijbehara area in the evening.

The officials said a policeman received minor injuries while taking cover, adding he was shifted to a hospital.

The area has been cordoned off and a hunt launched to nab the attackers, they said.
