Srinagar: District Legal Services Authority Kupwara has impressed upon the concerned Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to prevent disclosure of the identity of a girl child whose throat-slit body was found in the district on Wednesday.

In its order through a Sub-judge, the Authority impressed upon the SSP to look into the matter and take necessary steps to prevent disclosure of the name and publication of the pictures of the victim.

The Sub-judge also asked the media and the general public to stop revealing the identity of the victim, “failing which the violators shall be booked under the relevant provisions of the law. Any breach already committed can be rectified by removal of the same forthwith.”

The disclosure of the identity of the girl including her parentage, according to the Sub-judge’s order is a violation of the law.

The law calls for the right to privacy in such matters and strictly forbids any kind of exposure of the victim’s identity. The disclosure also hampers investigation, the order said.

The order was passed after the Authority noticed that the media and general public are circulating the identity of the victim and other incidental details insensitively and causally on the internet. The act, it said, is causing anger and fury among the masses.

The incident had happened in Khurhama area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara on Wednesday evening. The throat-slit body of the minor girl was found adjacent to her home.
